What is 3D Printing? - 3D Printing is the process of making three-dimensional objects (real objects) from raw materials with the method of laying materials in layers. 3D printing is also known as Additive Manufacturing.

Additive Manufacturing is a manufacturing technology that adds material on top of the material (in layers) so that it can form an object. To be able to create 3d printing objects, a tool called a 3D Printer.

In contrast to the manufacturing of 3D objects carried out by companies using large machines, the size of a 3D printer is relatively small. You can put it down and start the production process just on your desk.


How Do 3D Printers Work?

3D printers print objects by heating the material, then the melted material is stacked in layers. many layers will form a three-dimensional object.

Inside a 3D printer, there are several important components. The first is the raw material, the second is the heating material, the third is the raw material, the fourth is the stepper motor and the fifth is the .gcode file which contains the command to drive the stepper motor.

The layers of this raw material melt, can be adjusted in thickness. The thinner the thickness of a material that is arranged, the smoother and more detailed the resulting object.

Generally the standard thickness used in 3d printing is 0.3 to 0.2mm. Some printers support printing with a layer thickness of up to 0.05mm.

Types of Raw Materials For 3D Printing

Currently, there are many raw materials which are also called filaments for 3D Printers. However, it should be noted that not all materials support 3D printers.

The most common and easy-to-use materials are Plastic, to be precise PLA and ABS. This material can be used in cheap printers, because to melt this filament it only ranges from 100-300 degrees Celsius.

While hard materials such as metal, can not use a cheap printer, because it requires a very high temperature.

The currently available materials quoted from all3dp are as follows.

1. Plastic (Termoplastik)

This is the most commonly used material. Almost all 3D printers in the world use plastic materials, besides being cheap they are also quite strong.

If you are a beginner, I suggest using plastic material for the process of printing 3d printing objects.

2. Composite (Mixed)

  • CONDUCTIVE / KONDUKTOR
    This material is usually based on PLA or ABS plastic mixed with a conductor material, so that it can conduct electricity.
    This material is often used for teaching or DIY purposes such as turning on LEDs, Arduino and others.
  • METAL / PLASTIC FILAMENT
    The metal filament referred to here is not 100% metal. However, the metal has been mixed with the main thermoplastic materials such as PLA and ABS.
  • ALUMIDA
    Alumina is a mixture of nylon and aluminum materials
  • WOOD
    Wood is also not made from 100% wood, but wood fibers mixed with thermoplastic materials
